Full Description
A watching brief took place in 2014 at the old Abattoir, Roman Road Aldington during the construction of 12 new houses. An area measuring 52m by 37m was excavated. 1 Shallow roughly square shaped feature was encountered. The fill contained 3 clay tobacco pipes dating from mid 17th to 19th century, 2 sherds of post-medieval pottery and 2 hand forged iron general purpose nails. The feature is likely the remains of a fence or post hole relating to the land's previous use. A further two quare features of similar size were encountered situated 1.8m apart and are likely to be more recent gate posts. Other finds from the site included 2 fragments of ceramic building material and a single animal bone with evidence of butchery. (1)
