Summary

Pottery, tile and glass and of Roman date was found with Quernstone and Prehistoric flintwork during a watching brief in 2012.

Full Description

A watching brief took place in connection with an extension at No.63 Wear Bay Road in 2012. No archaeological features were observed in the three trenches but a number of finds were. 111 sherds of pottery were recovered, predominatly belinging to the Iron Age and Roman Periods. However there were two heavy tempered sherds that could be Bronze Age. 30 fragments of Roman tile were recovered, mostly small undiagnostic fragments. There are also four medieval/post-medieval peg-to;es/ 12 modern fragments of glass were recovered. 3 fragments of greensand quernstone where unearthed. 17 struck flints were found together with a flint core which had been re-used as a hammerstone, the majoritycan be attributed to the late Neolithic or Bronze Age but there were also blades of possible Mesolithic date.
