Full Description
A archaeological asssesment including a walkover survey took place in 2014 in Brokes wood. A series of field bounaries were observed. The comprise of a small rounded bank with a corresponding ditch which is located on the field side of the boundary. The banks are between 1.6m and 2m wide and up to 0.3m high. They correspond to those recorded on the Tithe map of 1838. They are significant evidence of the expansion of farming and are datable to the early post-medieval period. 3 large post-medieval quarries were also observed, 1 large one in the middle of the wood, a smaller one in the north west corner and one in the south-east corner. The size of them suggests that they were dug for sandstone. However, the smallest quarry in the south-east corner lies on the boundary suggesting it may predate the field and be medieval. (1)
