Full Description
In 2014 an interprative walkover survey took place at Shorncliffe Garrison. Two air-raid shelters were constructed in 1940 on the site to protect personnel in the event of a German air raid. The entrances were visible during the walkover survey. 1 sits at the top of a slop with a concrete access into a subterranean chamber. The other is observed as an earthen mound, into which there are two sloping concrete entrances. They are both defensive and date from 1940-1945. (1)
In 2018 an archaeological evaluation involving the exavation of seven trenches was undertaken on the site. The topsoil was removed from an 8.5m² area over the air raid shelter to record the level of preservation. The concrete appeared to be sound and the location of the shelter has been confirmed. (2)
