Full Description
Prehistoric flint assemblage recovered in archaeological watching brief (by Canterbury Archaeological Trust) of machine excavation of groundworks of development at site. (1)
The report on the watching brief details the find as follows:
"In the Autumn of 2013 an archaeological watching-brief was undertaken during the groundworks for a
new Visitor Centre and car park being constructed at the Battle of Britain Memorial site, Capel-le-Ferne,
between Dover and Folkestone (NGR 624576 138212, centred). This work carried on from earlier
evaluation trenching and subsequent targeted excavations conducted on selected areas of the site. The
present fieldwork allowed the recovery of a further large assemblage of prehistoric flintwork, adding to
that previously discovered. This lithic material ranges in date from the Mesolithic to the late Neolithic
period. No associated cut-features were located and there was no certainly contemporary pottery. None of the flintwork recovered came from completely undisturbed contexts." (1)
