Full Description

A watching brief took place over 4 sections of a water pipeline in 2002. A cremation In a pottery vessel was excavated. Although much disturbed, it apparently consisted of cremated animal bone (‘sheepsized’ longbone) fragments and 48g of burnt flint. Unfortunately the fragmentary nature of the pottery meant this feature could not be dated. This combination of elements makes interpretation of this feature difficult. Given the fragility of the pottery a prehistoric/Iron age date may not be unreasonable. There was also a scatter of small undated features, these may also be prehistoric in date. In addition several Mesolithic/Neolithic flints were recovered from the topsoil strip. (1)
