Full Description

In 2007 and 2008 a programme of archaeological evaluation took place at the site which is now Thanet Earth. Six ring ditches, undoubtedly representing the remains of ploughed out burial mounds or barrows were located and mostly fully excavated (apart from baulks that were occasionally left in situ). Four (Barrows 1‐4) were found in the southern part of the site, the other two (Barrows 5‐6) further north and more isolated. The form of these
features and their associated burials, where present, indicates that they probably date from the latest Neolithic/early Bronze Age period. Barrows 3 and 4 contained inhumation burials C‐14 dated to the first half of the second millennium BC, which could imply that these were secondary insertions, although their central locations may favour a primary interpretation.
The first barrow contained a grave of a crouching adult male inhumation with associated grave goods. Barrow 2 revealed five graves adjacent to each other lying within the central area of the round barrow, forming an approximate line from near the centre south‐westwards; none were well preserved and no grave goods were associated. Another barrow revealed a few scraps of badly preserved skeleton. Barrow 4 revealed a single grave located slightly off‐centre (just south‐west) within the interior and contained the well preserved remains of an adult (SK6245) lying crouched on the base. No grave goods were found with this burial. Barrq 5 revealed very few finds apart from seven sherds of prehistoric pottery and a fragment of worked antler. Two graves were located adjacent to each other lying slightly north of centre within the ring‐ditch. Barrow 6 was a complete ring ditch but no central burial was found.
In addition to the interments in barrows, a scatter of more isolated burials of this period was located across the northern part of the site. These inhumation burials were normally accompanied by a beaker, in one instance two, but did not seem to be associated or encircled by a ditch. (1)
