An archaeological evaluation took place in 2007 and 2008 at the site which is now Thanet Earth. The Anglo‐Saxon period is only marginally represented at Thanet Earth, although a number of interesting finds, possibly from very early in the period were made. A settlement was found clustered around Barrow 6, and the two Roman enclosures. Enclosure 9 was cut on its south side by an early Anglo‐Saxon sunken‐featured structure (SFB 2; Plate 32). The structural arrangement of the building was unusual, for it not only had the more common postholes at each of its longitudinal ends (normally considered to have supported a gabled roof), but three more down each side and one in the south‐west corner. Associated finds included an iron knife, a bead, a late Roman coin of Allectus, a bone weaving point and a collection of late Roman and early Anglo‐Saxon pottery was also recovered from the backfill. A second smaller 2‐post sunken‐featured structure (SFB 4) was found just to the west of the enclosure, to the south‐west of the barrow; this was probably too small to represent any form of domestic residence. Other features probably relating to the settlement were a well and part of an oval enclosure (Enclosure 12), both a short distance to the south‐east. (1)
