An archaeological evaluation took place in 2007 and 2008 on the site which is now Thanet Earth. The medieval features on Thanet Earth date to the period between the mid‐eleventh century to the early part of the thirteenth, possibly extending to 1350. The earliest features were a sequence of drove roads and trackways, defined by either hollow ways or pairs of ditch. At least five rectilinear fields (Fields M1‐5), also defined by ditches, were arranged between the two central droveways. Anout 70 sunken-feature structures were recorded, most were within enclosures or cutting enclosure ditches. The variation in the nature of these enclosures and structures and their often protracted development, is highly suggestive of a considerably more varied and complex, though still predominantly agricultural regime in the area. The only other significant medieval features found were a number of large quarries, some again associated with the enclosure systems (though probably later), others were more isolated. The medieval activity seems to cease completely at some time in the early fourteenth century, most of the field and enclosure ditches and their associated banks or hedge lines probably degrading naturally, or eradicated by subsequent ploughing.
