Full Description
An archaeological evaluation by Canterbury Archaeological Trust in November 2014 uncoeverd a very badly disrupted site with some identifiable post medieval features in the Eastern half of the site. (1)
The report summarised and concluded on these results as follows:
"The aim of this phase of archaeological work at Hart Street was to evaluate the potential
for geoarchaeological and archaeological features and deposits within the PDA."
"The results of the evaluation show that although the PDA has been greatly disturbed by
recent development, archaeological features and deposits of post-medieval and early
modern date have survived on the site. The earliest and perhaps best preserved of these
were identified in trench TR 4, located adjacent to Barker Road, on the eastern side of
the PDA. This trench recorded a stratified sequence of deposits consisting of pits and
probable surfaces dating back to at least the early post-medieval period overlain by
walls, pits and other features of post-medieval to early modern date."
"Further remnants of possible post-medieval structures and domestic activity were
identified at the eastern end of trench TR 3 which is represented by stone wall (305)
and pit [306] and at the eastern end of trench TR 1 where stone wall (113) and
associated floor surface (114) may indicate the presence of a building fronting on to
Hart Street."
"Trench TR 2 however revealed no deposits or features of archaeological significance.
This paucity of remains would suggest that this more elevated area of the PDA was
truncated during the construction and development of the site as a car showroom at the
end of the twentieth century, if not before." (1)
