Full Description
An archaeological evaluation took plave at Northfleet West substation in 2010. In one trench 3 Late Prehistoric flint flakes were found. Trench 302 was the only one to contain a discrete feature , a gulley lwhichcontained crumbs of flint-tempered pot as well as burnt and struck flint. Twenty-five to thirty pieces of fire cracked flint were recovered from the fill of the gully feature and one broad blade of a Mesolithic to Neolithic date. The two crumbs from are both flint-tempered, one oxidised with a sand-free matrix, the other reduced with a fine sandy matrix. The flint-tempered sherd with a sand-free matrix could be of Bronze Age or Iron Age date, but the latter seems more likely given the nature of the other fabrics across the site, which is indicative of late Middle Iron Age or Late Iron Age date. This fits with the known evidence for Iron Age activity in the Springhead area. (1)
