Full Description
An excavation took place in 2011 at Pinden Quarry. The features dated to the late Iron Age/early Roman period appear to define part of a second field system, which may in part have respected boundaries defined in the late Bronze Age. Late Iron Age/early Roman pottery was found in only two features: the subrectangular ditched enclosure and a ditch which contained part of a smithing hearthbottom. The remaining features assigned to the late Iron Age/early Roman phase have been dated on the basis of their alignment and spatial relationship with the rectangular enclosure. As has been noted above, their chronology is uncertain and some of them could, in fact, have formed parts of the late Bronze Age field system. Apart from the pottery mentioned above, the only finds from the ditches consisted of residual worked flint, burnt unworked flint, and a very few fragments of animal bone. (1)
