Full Description

Extensions to Open Area excavations at Davington priory cricket Ground took place in December 2012. They were conducted by Faversham Society Archaeological Research Group as part of an ongoing series of investigations entitled "The Davington Mysteries".

A posthole was uncovered and a relatively cohesive Bronze age and Iron age artefactual assemblage was recovered.

This included Bronze Age and Iron Age pottery inclusions and flintwork ranging in date from the Mesolithic to the Iron Age but predominantly Bronze Age and Iron Age.

Interestingly, the stratigraphy and artefactual evidence of this extension appears relatively simple cin contrast to the other Davington excavations. In other excavations material recovered has ranged incredibly widely in terms of dates with contexts being very disturbed.

The report comments on the peculiarity of the lack of medieval finds in this trench considering the proximity of a Medieval Manor.
