Full Description
Harrison's Map 1888 shows 4 find spots at 'Uffon Hill 12 Acres' whereas Roe only records one hand-axe from 12 acres. Prestwhich refers to 62 implements from 12 acres and Fane Hill. (1,2,3)
Numerous reports relating to surface-finds in late 19th century (3, 4, 5) and early 20th century (6, 7). Numerous material recorded by Roe in the 1960s (8) then listed in the Southern Rivers Project in the 1990s (9).
TQ 588572 Findspots of 66 Lower Palaeolithic handaxes, three retouched flakes and three flakes in Folkstone Beds geology. This site coveres an area of 12 acres and includes sites known as South Heronshaw, Jolly's Plantation and railway widening apart from Fane Hill itself. A concentration of palaeoliths may exist in this area. (9)
