Full Description
Former radar station was built by the Decca Radar Company, c1960, and was used for the development and testing of marine radar equipment for the commercial shipping sector. The building was sometimes called a 'Marconi' shed but in fact had nothing at all to do with Marconi. The building was put forward for listing but the Historic England report concluded:
"As with many technologies, radar was developed initially for military applications. It played a particularly
important role in aircraft detection during the Second World War and its use continued, and was developed,
during the Cold War. A number of buildings associated with radar have been designated, such as the Dunkirk
Radar Tower, Kent, (1937, listed Grade II) and the Hope Cove Radar Station, near Salcombe, Devon,
(1952-4, listed Grade II). Both examples are listed, amongst other reasons, for their historic significance in
relation to international conflicts, their reflection of important technological developments, and because of the
level of survival of the buildings or structures. The former Decca radar station at Dungeness does not have a
level of interest comparable with these examples. Built in its first incarnation between 1959 and 1965, there is
no evidence to suggest that the site is associated with the early development of radar technology or
subsequent major technological advancements. Neither is the site associated with the use of radar for
military purposes, so it does not have a connection with important international events. Furthermore, the
building is in an advanced state of dilapidation, with the distinctive roof-top platforms which held the antennae
having collapsed. Even were the building to have special historic interest at a national level, its loss of original
fabric and structural form makes it improbable that the building could be listed. For these reasons, the former
Decca radar station is not recommended for listing.
Not withstanding the conclusion reached above, the building nevertheless does contribute to the unique
character of Dungeness. The area has a fishing heritage, and a history as a low-key holiday destination, with
the ad hoc establishment of holiday homes, in some cases formed from redundant railway carriages. In
addition to this, although not well understood, is the history of scientific and military experimentation and
development in the area. Lighthouse and fog horn technology was tested here, indeed marked on maps is
the ‘experimental station’, operated by Trinity House (the lighthouse authority). There was also a First World
War wireless station at Dungeness, the exact location of which is yet to be established. Pre-1914 the nearby
Lydd artillery ranges were a base for other scientific work, including the development of Lyddite as a high
explosive, and nearby are three scheduled early warning acoustic devices (‘sound mirrors’), dating from the
1920s. Because of the diversity of the various activities in the area, its isolation, and perhaps in some cases
the secrecy which surrounded the work, this aspect of Dungeness’ history is under-recognised. This is
compounded by the loss of associated buildings and structures, an example being the eccentric Foghorn
House (also known as the Low Light and Foghorn). Although now sadly without its idiosyncratic platforms, the
former Decca radar station forms part of this aspect of Dungeness’ heritage and is in this way a valuable
survivor. The former Decca radar station is of clear local interest as part of the wider story of research and
development at Dungeness, but does not meet the criteria for listing at a national level."(1)
