Full Description

During an archaeological evaluation in 1990 the chalk-block foundations of a number of structures were located, probably of 2nd century date and related to the use of the area as a Classis Britannica fort (c. AD 138-208)

The structures included:

Excavators reference AB-1-1 : located in trench 1 and consisted of two joining chalk block foundations cut by the contractors trial pit.

Excavators reference AB-1-4: chalk block drain with large capstones (located beneath AB-1-5)

Excavators reference AB-1-5: small section of high level chalk-block structure. Not excavated.

Excavators reference: AB-1-6 small chalk block structure, stratigraphically above AB-1-4

Excavators reference: AB-1-7: complex succession of partly robbed chalk-block structures, badly damaged by contractors trial-pit. Most related stratigraphy had been destroyed by cellaring. It is not clear if dating evidence was found but the excavators concluded that the features must relate to the 2nd century use of the site.(1)
