Full Description
A substantial mortared flint base was revealed in 1977 during excavations undertaken by Kent Archaeological Rescue Unit off Cow Gate Hill, Dover. The feature had been cut away by what appeared to be an early post-medieval pit. The precise function of this feature remains unclear but the composition of the mortar appears to be medieval rather than Roman and the stratigraphic position is consistent with such a date. The exact interpretation of this structure must remain unknown. It does not obviously appear to form part of a building. (taken from source) (1-2)
