Full Description
During an archaeological evaluation carried out in 2009 at the site of 1-7 Cowgate Hill, cellars relating to, but also pre-dating, the construction of 1-7 Cowgate were found beneath the floors of No. 5 Cowgate. These may relate to the Town Porter's Lodge described in the 1861 census. The two walls joined at a right angle to form the north-west corner of a structure measuring internally at least 1.70 m. (N-S) by 0.50 m. (E-W). Its floor seems to have lain at about 0.87 m. below the present floor-level but no obvious surfacing was noted. As surviving, the cellar walls stood to a maximum height of 0.40 m. above cellar floor level, set on a foundation that extended below this level. On the north side, wall 203 was provided with a much more substantial foundation than wall 204, perhaps suggesting that these walls were not of a single build. The walls were set in a larger construction pit, which had cut through all the preceding post-medieval and Roman deposits. (taken from source)
