Full Description
The Kent coalfields underwent a major expansion during the 1920s due to the opening of new mines at Tilamnstone, Snowdown and Betteshanger. In addition to the new miners villages at Elvington, Mill Hill and Aylesham existing villages were expanded alomg the route of the East Kent railway. One such village was Eythorne. Land that had been open fields and allotments to the south and north of the railway were built on to provide living accomodation for the influx of miners from across the country. The houses are still used for occupation but the village has expanded further with modern development.
