Full Description

NGR TR 05012 44490 (1) The Kiln/Drying shed structure is located in the centre of the site and is shown by the historic mapping to have been constructed between 1939 and 1961. It is likely to be broadly contemporary with the 22 bay-kiln to the east, probably constructed at some time in the late 1940’s. On the 1972 Ordnance Survey map the building is labelled as a kiln, but other sources suggest it could have served as a drying shed for bricks.
The curtain walls and gable at the southern end of the kiln building are built in a moderately well coursed irregular mix of red and yellow bricks (Plate 17). The coursing exhibited a marked degree of irregularity in places, indicating a rushed or casual approach to the construction and reflecting the utilitarian character of the buildings on the site.
The structure has a steel framed roof, built from eight frames and trusses, dividing the pitched roof space into eight bays (Plate 20). The steel roof structure is supported on a sill formed by the top of the single storey eastern and western brick walls. A single brick buttress in the centre of the southern brick gable reinforced the support for the ridge beam of the roof.
The complex bracing of the roof trusses had been designed to create the maximum span, eliminating the requirement for support from internal structure and maximising the area of open floor space within the building. The interior was entirely open with no permanent internal structures to break up the space.
