Full Description
NGR TR 05046 44488 (1) The 22 Bay Kiln was built on a plot adjacent to the road in 1947. The original structure consisted of a pitched roof with an open sided, roofed extension on the eastern side of the long axis of the building. At the northern end of the kiln was a chimney which measured 39.6 metres high (130 ft.) and was constructed from 137,000 high quality ‘white gault’ bricks which were made on site in the circular down draught kiln before it was removed from the site sometime after c. 1940’s (ibid). Following the closure of the brickworks in 1972, the chimney was demolished with explosives in 1975.
When it was in use much of the structure of the kiln building may have been ephemeral, the steel framework designed only to shelter the kiln mechanism which may itself have consisted of moveable or temporary structures.
