Full Description
NGR TR 05009 44528 (1) A building is first shown in the location of the Kiln and Production building on the 1898 Ordnance Survey map, standing to the south east of the down draught kiln. The structure was probably adapted and changed over the years, but the original structure formed the present footprint which was established after 1961. A chimney located to the north of the structure is shown on the 1939, 1961 and 1972 maps suggests that the building may have been associated with the early kilns, at some time serving as a drying shed or possibly a production shed where bricks and/or tiles were formed prior to being fired. Historic photographs of the cross structure at the northern end of the building show that it had brick gables at the east and west ends and a pitched, possibly tiled roof.
The Kiln and Production building has two storeys and was predominantly constructed in yellow brick, with detailing of three stringer courses of red brick between the first and second storey. Arched lintels in red brick are located over the window openings in the building’s elevations.
The brickwork and detailing are similar to that of 1 and 2 Pottery, suggesting they are contemporary structures. Much of the brickwork in the Kiln and Production building is poorly coursed and levelled and appeared to have been hastily laid, giving the impression that the builder was knowledgeable in brick construction techniques but had applied them casually to create a functional and utilitarian building
