Full Description

NGR TR 05032 44463 (1) The clay processing workshop is first shown on the 1939 Ordnance Survey map having been constructed between the editions of 1907 and 1939, most likely around 1939. The workshop is located near to the east of the terminal of a tramway shown on the 1939 map, which leads from the clay pits to the west. The tram way was replaced later by a conveyor belt which is shown leading directly to the workshop on the 1961 and 1972 maps. It is likely that this workshop was involved in processing the clay extracted from the pit before it was moulded into bricks. By 1972 an additional structure abutting the original workshops is shown on the Ordnance survey maps. Directly connected to the conveyor belt this appears to be a loading bay and additional workshop space associated with the working of the conveyor.
The earlier structural element of the clay processing area, located on the eastern side, is a rectangular shed built of well coursed mixed yellow and red bricks. The entrance to the structure, consisting of a wide opening secured with large sliding door panels, is located on the north east gable. Steel supports which once supported an overhead canopy shown in the Ordnance Survey maps project from the wall above the sliding door mechanism.
