Summary

During archaeological work at Hart Street/Broadway, a Medieval pit containg Medieval pottery sherds (c.1275-1400), animal bone, fragments of brick, tile and oyster shell was uncovered. The pit seems to have been used for the disposal of cess. The pit also contained a partial dog skeleton.

Full Description

Medieval pit containg medieval pottery sherds (c.1275-1400), animal bone, fragments of brick, tile and oyster shell. The pit seems to have been used for the disposal of cess. The pit also contained a partial dog skeleton.
The material suggesting it as a cess pit includes animal bones and teeth (dog, birds, amphibians, fish), mineralised vegetable matter (grape pips, elderberry, rubus pits/stones - blackberry etc), and faecal concretions. The pit was uncovered during archaeological work at Hart Street/Broadway in November 2014. (1)
