Maritime record TR 45 NE 12 - Possible wreck of the Salina

Summary

Probable remains of 1921 wreck of Norwegian cargo vessel which foundered within the Kellett Gut, and has been dispersed on a number of occasions since 1936. If the SALINA, she was a steel-built, screw-driven steamer, but the identity of this wreck has not been fully confirmed and she is also known locally as the RANGITAIKI.

Least echosounder depth 42 in general depth 47ft. Scour depth 54ft. 19-MAR-1968 Least echosounder depth 39ft in general depth 56 - 58ft. Lies in two parts, close together. Good sonar contact. 30-JAN-1974 Examined in 51 16 22N 001 34 27E. Least echosounder depth 12.4 in general depth 18.9m. Scour depth 19.9m. Length about 130m. Lies NW/SE with small scour on S side. 18-NOV-1980 In 51 16 23N 001 34 27E. Swept clear at 11.6, Foul at 12m. Least echosounder depth 12.6 in general depth 16.3 To 17.5m. Scour on N side 19.5m Deep. No sonar shadow. Length 110m, beam 20m. Lies 150/330 deg. 13-JUL-1991 In 51 16 22.9N 001 34 26.9E. Least echosounder depth 11.4 in general depth 16m. Scour depth 17.3m. Side scan sonar height 4.2m. Apparently lies in two parts, orientated 020/200 deg. Least depth obtained on northern part. (1)
