Full Description

During the excavation of 5 test pits on the site of a former shop in November 2015, two previously unknown features were encountered. These were a truncated chalk block lined well head, cut into the chalk geology on the southern side of the site and another curvilinear chalk block wall which may have been an infilled cellar or chamber, or possibly another truncated well shaft. The test pits revealed that there had been considerable horizontal surface truncation throughout the plot. It is considered that the area had been artificially levelled, the full extent of which is unclear. No dating or further information is provided. (1)
