Full Description
The Green Wall, was constructed sometime between 1615 and 1736 by the Borough of Sandwich. The purpose of the Green Wall was not to keep out the tidal waters but to retain fresh water for use in Sandwich. Earthworks such as the Green Wall survive as public footpaths. (1)
Part of the Mediaeval and later sea defences of Sandwich. In 1993-4 it was sectioned at TR33425808. This revealed a bank of clay loam circa 1.20m high and 10m wide. The earthwork runs due East from Sandwich on the North side of the Vigo Spong Stream, as far as the North Cut, which it probably predates.
