Full Description
The Granary
The building currently known as the Granary stands to the south west of the Windmill. It is shown in the First Edition Ordnance Survey of 1874 as one of the group of buildings that were enclosed within an approximately triangular boundary which encompasses several buildings associated with the windmill and its operation. The main access to the buildings was from a road on the west side of the enclosure. It is likely that this building was constructed at the same time as the windmill, forming part of an integrated system for delivery, storage and processing of grain which took place within the enclosed area. The structure was probably used to store the sacks of threshed grain that were delivered to the site and were waiting to be milled.
The Granary building contains a hoist in the centre of the roof structure where grain sacks were lifted through a hatch to be stored on the second storey. The Granary was heavily restored in the refurbishment of the mill between 1985 and its re-opening in 1991 and it is not certain that the fittings that are present in the Granary are contemporary with the original mill complex. The Granary was converted into a residential unit in 2013.
Granary outbuilding
The outbuilding to the north west of the Granary which is the subject of this historic building survey report is shown on the 1874 Ordnance Survey map in its present location. The structure abuts the Granary and must be a slightly later addition to the complex. The building itself contains no evidence of its purpose within the mill complex, however its appearance on the 1874 map suggest it was in use during a period when a steam engine had been installed as a source of auxiliary power for the mill and it may have been added to serve some role associated with the steam engine.
The Granary outbuilding is being converted to a dwelling independent of the Granary, with its own associated planning permission which required the present survey of the existing building.
