Full Description
Between 16th May and 2nd June 2011, the excavation of 50 trenches took place as part of an ongoing programme of archaeological evaluation. Two superimposed co-axial field systems appear to be represented among various ditch alignments of the site (15 trenches revealed ditches). The earliest system is possibly of Middle-Late Bronze Age date, and the other appears to be Medieval.
These dates are based on two finds relating to each field system and are tentative suggestions for the age of the systems. A single small abraded sherd of prehistoric pottery was recovered from one ditch and seven sherds of 13th-14th Century pottery were also recovered from another ditch.
The suggested land use is low agricultural which is consistent with previous investigation on the site.
NOTE: location is generalised to the area with the majority of trenches containing ditches that form part of the two field systems. (1)
