At the time of loss the Julian ("Old Style") Calendar was still in use in England, with the New Year also being celebrated on 25th March. This remained the case until the introduction of the Gregorian ("New Style") Calendar in line with much of Europe in 1752. In many original English sources dates between 1st January and 24th March inclusive were therefore recorded as one year "behind" the Gregorian Calendar. As transcribed in source (1), the dates from the original papers have been normalized to the Gregorian Calendar, still in universal modern use, but further contemporary references may refer to the date of loss as 1668 Old Style rather than 1669 New Style.
