Full Description
Site of a possible pillbox. This was identified by the Defence of Britain Project but later (2014) not verified by the English Heritage assessment of the Second World War Stop Line features. It is possible that this feature recorded by the Defence of Britain survey is actually either of TQ 77 SW 66 or TQ 77 SW 1082. The English Heritage report on the Second World War Stop Line describes this feature: "The site of a Second World War reinforced concrete rectangular artillery pillbox recorded during the Defence of Britain survey. Condition: No pillbox could be identified at this grid reference during the Hoo Peninsula Historic Landscape Project, although an artillery pillbox of very similar description was recorded about 22m to the west (NRHE 1418672) and a hexagonal pillbox was recorded about 70m to the south (NRHE 1543680)." (1)
Pillbox: overgrown.
Pillbox. Rectangular brick and concrete anti-tank gun pillbox, with main embrasure facing North. Very overgrown. Possible traces of a second building at its side. By the roadside, Cliffe. (1)
The location recorded for this structure falls within an area mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project. No pillbox could be identified at the assigned grid reference on the available aerial photographs, although an anti tank pillbox with an adjacent shed was recorded about 22 metres to the west (Monument 1418672) and a hexagonal pillbox was recorded about 70 metres to the south (Monument 1543680). It is possible that the pillbox described in authority 1 is a duplicate siting of one of those pillboxes. (2)
