Full Description

This feature is recorded in the English Heritage Historic Area Assessment for St Mary Hoo Parish. The report states:"In the 1790s Edward Hasted observed that the land in the parish was 'not so much subject to gravel' except around Coombe. By the early 19th century gravel extraction was taking place and two pits flanking the Ratcliffe Highway by Barn Street Farm were depicted on the tithe map of 1830. These seem to have passed out of use by the end of the century." (1)
