Full Description

This feature is noted in the Historic England website pastscape as having been identified as part of the wider Hoo Peninsula project. The report states:
"A probable settlement, of uncertain date but consistent in form with an Iron Age or Roman date, is located on the lower northern slopes of Deangate Ridge overlooking Cooling. The site comprises a compact arrangement of rectilinear enclosures grouped around the junction of two perpendicular trackways. The whole complex, covering an area of just over 2 hectares, is visible as cropmarks and has been mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project. The enclosures vary in size. The smaller ones probably represent domestic enclosures and are interspersed among larger enclosures which probably represent fields. Most of the enclosures lie on the north side of a broad, ditched trackway which runs from west to east along the foot of the slope of Deangate Ridge. A second ditched trackway runs perpendicular to, and crosses, the first, following a course from the higher ground in the south towards the marshes in the north and crossing the west to east trackway. The ditches which delineate both trackways appear to have been re-cut several times, especially around the junction. This settlement is broadly similar in appearance to a larger group of enclosures, fields and trackways just to the west (Monument 1548490) and is probably associated with the larger complex, although no obvious physical link was observed on the available aerial photographs. At least sixty five pits of varying sizes are located within, and possibly associated with, the enclosures and trackways. The pits could be Iron Age, Roman or Early Medieval in date and appear to be of two types: large sub rectangular pits and smaller sub circular pits. These features have been recorded separately as Monument 1549352.

The enclosures vary in size. The smaller ones, whose dimensions range from 5m by 4.5m to 29m by 15m, probably represent domestic enclosures. These are interspersed among larger enclosures, probably representing fields, with typical dimensions of 55.3m by 35.1m, 51m by 28.6m and 46.7m by 27.9m. Most of the enclosures lie on the north side of a broad, ditched trackway over 8m wide, which runs from west to east along the foot of the slope of Deangate Ridge (TQ 7578 7450 to TQ 7586 7450 to TQ 7590 7452 to TQ 7594 7454 to TQ 7599 7462). The trackway is 267.5m in total length, although only the northern side is visible for the easternmost half of its length. A second ditched trackway 6.5m wide, with a total length of about 175m, runs perpendicular to the first, following a course from the higher ground in the south (TQ 7588 7447) towards the marshes in the north (TQ 7581 7463) and crossing the west to east trackway at TQ 7586 7450. The ditches which delineate both trackways appear to have been re-cut several times, especially around the junction.
