Full Description
The excavation of 16 test pits, in order establish ground conditions on the site, were monitored between the 14th and 19th of August 2008. These investigations were undertaken in advance of the proposed development of the site.
Archaeological deposits were recorded in two test pits on the site. Other test pits contained cultural material in topsoil deposits in the form of ceramic building material and a single sherd of medieval pottery. In Test Pit 16 a weathered peg tile hearth of kiln base was uncovered. The surface extended the length and width of the test pit (1.7m by 0.5m) and was constructed from re-used late medieval Kent peg tiles. The tiles were places tightly together, on edge and embedded into the clay bed. Although use of the surface as a hearth or kiln is certain, the context is less so. The hearth may have been domestics, part of a small workshop, or associated with external industrial usage.
The test pit was not excavated further. (1)
