Full Description
A Roman metalled surface was located during excavation of site near the Unitarian church in 1951-52. Three of the four excavated trenches which were opened revealed a metalled and shingled surface, in trenches XXX and XXXII this surface lead steeply down, south-east, towards the old estuary of the Dour. It is difficult to establish whether the surface represented a road, track or part of a general hard surface. A number of finds were located both directly above and below this surface all dating to between the first and second century. (1)
