Full Description
Excavations in 1983-5 at Snargate/Adrian Street by Kent Archaeological Rescue Unit revealed a Roman terrace. The natural chalk surface appears to have been cut back to create a largely level terrace, at about 10.10m OD. Only the back of the cut and some 2.3m of the terrace survived, but it is likely that it would have originally continued further south. The terrace was filled with a brown loam, perhaps silting from higher up the slope, containing Roman pot sherds and minor building debris. The pottery mostly dates from the second century AD. All of the burials located at this site had been cut into the fill of this terrace and in places also into the natural chalk. (1-2)
