Full Description
Taken from source:
A rare coin of Matidia, niece of the emperor Trajan, was located during excavations undertaken by KARU at Albany Place Dover in 1990. The coin, in excellent condition, is made of bronze and is of a type rarely found on a British site. It seems to have been minted about AD 113-117. It shows the large head of Matidia, who was not only the niece of Trajan but the mother in law of the next emperor Hadrian. The coin reverse depicts the standing figure of Matidia protecting her two children. One of her children, Sabina, eventually married Hadrian. The coin is a very rare find and was from a key deposit inside a Roman building. It was unlikely to have been in circulation for more than 20 years owing to its fine unworn condition. This suggests that it was dropped within the building soon after AD 130, this provided good conformation for dating. (1).
