Monument record TR 34 SW 1250 - Medieval window, eastern wall of the Medieval hall of Maison Dieu, High Street, Dover.

Summary

A watching brief during renovation work observed the remains of the infilled eastern window of the Medieval hospitals Great Hall, which was exposed after workmen stripped the wall of plaster. About 2.73m of the window was revealed, with a minimum width of 1.66m, its original height may have been around 6m (location accurate to the nearest 10m based on available information).

Full Description

During a watching brief undertaken during the renovation work of the Great Hall of the Maison Dieu of High Street, Dover, The original eastern window of the hall was exposed beneath the plaster. About 2.73m of the window was revealed, with a minimum width of 1.66m, its original height may have been around 6m. (1)

The blocked east window retains its medieval surround, the transition from a convex moulding on the jamb to a concave one in the arch, points to the involvement of Michael of Canterbury. (2)
