Full Description

Excavation in 1950 at a war damaged site to the west of Market Square, near the Church of St. Martin Le Grand revealed the principal part of two Roman rooms. The first phase of development and occupation of this site consisted of an area of made ground to the east of the site. This made ground contained a considerable number of sherds including samian dating to AD 130-140. At roughly the same time on top of the made ground the walls of a room were built and a burnt clay floor was laid. The foundations of the wall were constructed of large chalk blocks. (1)
