Full Description

Taken from source: 'The trade directories covering the period from 1899 to 1927 show that nos 149 and 150 Snargate Street were absorbed into a single commercial enterprise operated as a confectionary shop. Prior to this, the 1832 trade directory shows that no. 150 was occupied by George Norwood, a watch and clock maker. The property is not mentioned in the trade directories of 1839 and 1855, suggesting a brief hiatus, before it reappears under the tenancy of John Wyatt Pettitt, cabinet maker, upholsterer and appraiser. This also records the tenancy of Misses Bennett and Johnson at no.150A, suggesting some form of commercial and residential sub-letting. The next trade directory of 1867 no longer records Pettitt at no. 150, although he does appear in the same trade directory at the adjacent property to the east (no. 151 Snargate Street), but as an apiarian and manufacturer of ‘Pettitt’s Improved Moveable Comb Hive’. It appears that this move may have been to an expansion of his business, which continues on two fronts trading as an apiculturist, at no. 151 and as a cabinet maker at no. 151a, until 1878. Following the departure of Pettitt from no.150 by 1867, the property is next in use by 1874 as a ‘fancy repository’ also known as a mineral shop, under the tenancy of Samuel Rowse. The shop continued in the same vein as a ‘fancy repository’ until 1891, but under the management of Miss Martha Ann Charge. Thereafter, from at least 1899 no. 150 Snargate Street was taken on by Richard Morgan as part of his confectionery business. From 1905 to 1927, no.150 and the adjoining property no.149 were both in use as a confectioners shop under the same management of Richard Morgan'. (1)

During an archaeological excavation undertaken at the site by PCA in 2016 a number of 19th and 20th century features were located and were interpreted as belonging to (the now demolished) 149-150 Snargate Street. Features dating to the earlier post medieval period are discussed elsewhere (TR 34 SW 986) but the earliest feature dating to the 19th and 20th century occupation of the site was the remnants of a party wall which separated the basements of both of the properties. This wall was truncated by two buttress type structures; these were probably supports for a fireplace on the floor above. Another wall was located in the northwest corner of the basement area; this was encountered at 5.03m OD and formed a stairwell measuring 1.7m by 1.7m. This stairwell appeared to truncate the chalk walls associated with the earliest phase of occupation at this site. Two brick floors located within the basement represent the last phase of masonry encountered and were seen across both properties; similar brick and mortar types were noted suggesting this was a single floor.
