Full Description

Taken from source: 'The early trade directories record no. 152 in use as a linen drapers, initially under the management of Abel Timson (in 1832), succeeded by 1839 by James Mercer. There are no entries in the trade directories for the period between 1855 and 1867. In 1874 and 1878 no.152 is recorded as a cobblers shop for James Gooding, boot and shoe maker and by 1891 is a tobacconist run by Henry William Savel. A photograph taken in 1898 shows that it had three storeys. There are no trade entries for this property between 1899 and 1909, although the 1905 Goad plan shows it in use as a confectionary shop. From 1915 to 1934 it was refreshment rooms (and later a confectionary shop) under the management of Henry Watts. It remained as a confectionary shop until 1938, but under the hand of Ms Alice Ambrose. By the 1950s it had been demolished' (1)

During an archaeological excavation undertaken at the site by PCA in 2016 a number of 19th and 20th century features were located and were interpreted as belonging to (the now demolished) 152 Snargate Street. Features dating to the earlier post medieval period are discussed elsewhere (TR 34 SW 1153) but the earliest feature dating to the 19th and 20th century occupation of the site was an I-shaped brick structure which consisted of machine frogged bricks set in a grey mortar and represents a likely basement support for a back to back fireplace. A bedding layer for a brick floor was also encountered as was a small portion of the floor itself measuring 2.5m by 2.4m. (2)
