Full Description

Taken from source: 'The early trade directories show that between 1832 and 1867, no. 154 was in use as a hairdressers shop by Thomas Hatton Cavell. From 1874 to 1899 it changes hands and opens as a shop selling curios, run by James Clarke, while from 1905 through to 1938 it becomes a greengrocers shop, run from 1905 to 1927 by Michael Becker and in 1938 by Page and Sons. A photograph taken in the 1950s shows that the small shop had two storeys'. (1)

During an archaeological excavation undertaken at the site by PCA in 2016 a number of 19th and 20th century features were located and were interpreted as belonging to (the now demolished) 154 Snargate Street. Features dating to the earlier post medieval period are discussed elsewhere (TR 34 SW 1155) but the features noted as belonging to the 19th and 20th centuries include a wide southern wall forming a party wall with 153, a western wall, a set of spiral stone entrance steps and, to the rear of a basement, a series of internal floors and an internal wall. The earliest of these features appears to be a tiled floor over which a later brick floor was laid. The northern and eastern walls of this basement were not encountered. The investigations revealed that the basement area was only to the front of the property. (2)
