Full Description

Taken from source: 'No. 155 Snargate Street is recorded in the trade directory of 1839 as a linen drapers and silk mercers for Leigh and Company. Again a demonstration that the area around Snargate was from the second quarter to third quarter of the 19th century, very much associated with the textile industry. By 1855 it is in use by a boot and shoemaker Butler Olding and in 1859 by grocer Robert Morris. It is first recorded as a public house in the trade directory of 1867 (although it may have been a pub earlier) as the ‘Ale Shades’ managed by Joseph Kemp. From 1874- 1878 it changed its name to the ‘Warrior’ and was managed by John Ashby for Gardners Brewery. From 1887 Paramour took over the pub and changed its name to the ‘Invicta’, which it maintained until its final demolition in 1973. During this period it was run by a succession of landlords A.E Harman, H A Poulson, George Harland, J. Gillespie, Walter Whiting, Josiah Baker, Alfred Davis, John Askie, Levy Barnett, Victor Charles and Frederick Charles Lewis (up to 1938). In 1950 the pub was extended and took over the neighbouring no. 156 Snargate Street. An undated photograph shows the pub in the 1950s. The rear of the pub was destroyed by a fire in June 1972, at which time it belonged the Whitbread brewery. The ruins were still standing in March 1973 but the area was eventually levelled and made into a car park for the adjacent Gateway Hovertel (no. 153 Snargate)'. (1)

During an archaeological excavation undertaken at the site by PCA in 2016 a number of 19th and 20th century features were located and were interpreted as belonging to (the now demolished) 154 Snargate Street. During this phase of works a section of the party wall and a series of surface make-up deposits were noted at the rear of the property. (2)
