Full Description
Taken from source: 'From the earliest available trade directory of 1832 through to the latest directory of 1938, covering a period of just under a century, no. 156 Snargate Street has been associated with, in one way or another, confectionary and baking. Edward Baster, confectioner and pastry cook is recorded in the 1832 directory, while Wellard Winter, similarly a confectioner and pastry cook, is incumbent by 1839. From 1867 through to 1909 the property changes hands and is run by Thomas Louis Delahaye, initially as a confectioner and fruitier and latterly as a wholesale confectioner (in 1909). Thereafter the business passes into the hands of Robert Charles Millway, who is recorded as a confectioner in the latest trade directory. The remains of a commercial oven built into the cliff at the rear of no. 156 Snargate Street must relate to the period when it served as a confectioner and bakery shop. The three storey building is shown in a 1950s photograph'. (1)
