Full Description
A deep sewer trench cut down the full width of this narrow street revealed a series of brick and stone built post medieval cellar walls associated with former buildings on the south side of the lane. There was also a succession of Medieval deposits. The bulk of these consisted of rubble, soil and domestic rubbish dumped along the margins of the river estuary, this provides clear evidence for the reclamation of this area in the later Medieval period. Quite possibly, this reclamation work reflects an expansion in the size of the town during this period. A waterlogged organic deposit at the base of the recorded sequence produced Norman pottery (1-3)
