Full Description

Two Sunken Featured Buildings were identified during archaeological investigations of land north of Cottington Road, Cliffsend. One was recorded in plan and preserved in situ as it was not fully exposed within the evaluation trench. A slot was excavated with the eastern SFB in order to ascertain its function. This structure appeared sub-oval in plan, although it also was not fully exposed within the evaluation trench, and measured 2.8m wide, 1.8m+ in length and 0.45m deep. A single posthole was identified within its eastern edge. The post appears to have been removed before the disused structure was filled with domestic waste as the fill of the posthole and base fill of the SFB are very similar and no post pipe was identified. It also contained a rich assemblage of cereal grain, including naked wheat and barley. The presence of naked wheat (Triticum “nudum”) Remains from probable weeds from agricultural fields are also abundant and include goosefoot, grasses, legumes, the daisy family (Asteraceae) and nettle (Urtica sp.) It is worthy to note, that the geophysical survey indicates the presence of frequent irregular shaped anomalies that may suggest the presence of more sunken feature buildings such as those recorded.
