Full Description

A watching brief on trenches for a major new water pipeline for Dover. This is the second phase of works (there were three in total). Area 6 includes Russell Street car park. The trenching here revealed a series of post medieval cellars and walls which would have belonged to the buildings that once fronted onto the south-eastern side of St. James' Street. Some fragments of stratified archaeological deposits were observed adjacent to the cellar walls. Further to the northwest, a short length of stratified deposits were recorded in the trench at the entrance of the car park, at the junction with Maison Dieu Road. These consisted of a series of floors of possible post medieval date but no dating evidence was recovered. There was extensive disturbance at the car park entrance due to service trenches. (1)
