Full Description
The site of Holy Trinity Church is shown in this location on historic maps dating to the late 19th and early 20th century. (1-5)
The A20 project consisted of a major archaeological watching brief and excavation programme, conducted across an extensive part of the maritime and water-front areas of this important historic town, ahead of major road construction and sewer trenching, between the summer of 1991 and the spring of 1993. There were 21 areas of archaeological investigation: the 8th was the Railway Bridge over railway at eastern end of Limekiln Street, adjacent to old Strond Street. An extended watching brief and palaeo-environmental sampling was undertaken ahead of bridge building. The features uncovered include the foundations of 19th century Holy Trinity Church, possible 19th century lime-kilns predating the church, 18th century clay pipe-manufacturing debris found in a pit, a post-medieval cellar walls and a well. Palaeo-environmental evidence including natural beach deposits and chalk rubble deposits from an ancient cliff collapse were also recovered. The finds recovered include post-medieval pottery, glass and a large sample of clay-pipes. (6)
