Full Description
In March 2014 the Canterbury Archaeological Trust undertook a watching-brief during the course of geo-technical investigations at Nos 149−156 Snargate Street, Dover (NGR 631811 141110, centred) Two boreholes drilled on the site determined the depth of the natural chalk. A network of eighteen trenches were also cut in order to ascertain something of the extent of post-medieval shop/domestic cellars in the area. The cellar walls exposed were variously constructed of red brick, yellow brick, chalk block, and occasionally greensand and flint rubble. Numerous different phases of work appeared to be represented, even within one property. Most walls were probably nineteenth century in date but some, especially the few of greensand rubble, could have been earlier. The cellars associated with each property represented had clearly developed differently. Solid concrete floors associated with the old Invicta pub were encountered in Trenches 1 and 1a. Two access stairways (poorly built) were noted in Trench 1a.(1)
