Monument record TR 34 SW 1391 - Post medieval graves, associated with the former cemetery of St. Martin-Le-Grand Church, Dover

Summary

Evaluation trenches were dug by Oxford Archaeological Unit between 1988 and 1991 at the White Cliffs Experience site in the town centre, these revealed that many of the Roman features were cut by later (possibly Medieval but probably post medieval) graves. These graves had also been encountered during the town centre rescue excavations undertaken by Kent Archaeological Rescue Unit in the 1970's, at both the Burial Ground Site and the Car Park site. (location accurate to the nearest 2m based on available information).

Full Description

Evaluation trenches were dug by Oxford Archaeological Unit between 1988 and 1991 to assess the condition of the archaeology and to pinpoint the position of some structures ahead of the construction of the White Cliffs Experience.

Trench 11 was situated between the north end of the barrack block B20 and the south wall of building 32 (building etc. numbers relate to those given by Philp). The latest Phase of Roman Activity at this site had been heavily cut by numerous later graves and little of it remained. The pottery discovered was mainly C17-C18 and from grave fills. All human bone was reburied in the local Charlton cemetery, the earlier graveyard being in use until the mid-C19. (1)

These graves cutting the underlying Roman features of the Classis Britannica fort were uncovered during the town centre rescue excavations undertaken by Kent Archaeology Rescue Unit in the 1970's. these were concentrated in two sites; the car part site which was situated just to the north of Queens Street and the Burial ground site which was located at the former site of the cemetery of the Church of St Martin-Le-Grande.
